The Author
Nathan Mawhinney is a certified futures and options analyst, Series 3–passed market observer, and an independent thinker.
His vision for this body of work is to provoke the questions investors and citizens should be asking themselves about the trajectory of our economy, and the contrarian trends shaping it.
His hope is that the articles speak for themselves.
The Publication
Contrarian Questions is an independent economic review and thought exercise. It is one continuous line of inquiry, published in sequence as short, digestible articles, where each entry begins with a question and follows real, verifiable data wherever it leads.
Every question starts in the same place:
What if [the economic trend at hand] continues moving in its current direction, at approximately its current rate, without meaningful intervention?
Where does that path lead? What would life, work, wealth, prices, government and society look like under those conditions?
Then comes the second question:
What if intervention occurs?
What options would exist? At what point would they become necessary, and what would they cost?
The purpose is not to predict which scenario occurs. It is to map the landscape of plausible futures while there is still time to make different decisions. If an undesirable outcome is avoidable, understanding how we would arrive there may help us avoid it. If some consequences are unavoidable, understanding them sooner leaves more time to prepare.
The more questions asked, the more clearly the range of futures created by today’s decisions comes into view.
